The Diamond Bar Men’s Club proudly welcomed The Yips Golf Club on Sunday for the inaugural Team Play at Diamond Bar Golf Course. The event featured six Two-Man Best Ball matches followed by eight Singles matches, with 14 total points on the line in a day filled with outstanding golf, friendly competition, and exceptional sportsmanship.
When the final putt dropped, Diamond Bar Men’s Club emerged with a hard-fought 7.5–6.5 victory—but the final score only tells part of the story.
Diamond Bar Builds an Early Lead
The Best Ball session belonged to Diamond Bar.
The home team came out with confidence, winning four of the six Best Ball matches to take a 4–2 lead into the Singles session. The pairing of John Garzone and David Vanore set the tone with a commanding 8 & 7 victory, while Richard Skaar and Bruce Bates, Augie Aguayo and Joseph Contreras, and Reyhan Almazar and Fernando Garcia each contributed valuable points to the team total.
By the conclusion of the Best Ball matches, Diamond Bar had built what appeared to be a comfortable advantage. With a 4–2 lead, the home club looked well positioned to capture the inaugural Team Play trophy.
But as every golfer knows, match play has a way of changing in a hurry.
The Yips Mount a Strong Comeback
The Yips Golf Club came out determined in the Singles matches and immediately began applying pressure.
As results from around the course started coming in, The Yips steadily chipped away at Diamond Bar’s lead. One point after another went in their favor, turning what had once appeared to be a comfortable cushion into a tightly contested battle.
The Yips ultimately claimed the Singles session 4.5–3.5, nearly erasing Diamond Bar’s morning advantage. What looked like it might become a runaway victory had suddenly turned into a nail-biter, with the inaugural Team Play coming down to the final match still on the course.
Outstanding Individual Performances
While the event was ultimately decided by a collective team effort, several Diamond Bar players delivered exceptional rounds worthy of special recognition.
James Snider – Player of the Day
James Snider earned Player of the Day honors after posting the lowest gross round of the entire competition. His remarkable round featured multiple birdies and a spectacular eagle, showcasing exceptional shot-making from start to finish. James’ outstanding play not only secured an important Singles point for Diamond Bar but also stood as the finest individual performance of the day.
Richard Skaar
Richard Skaar also turned in one of the day’s best performances during the Best Ball session. Richard caught fire with several timely birdies and consistently solid play, helping his team secure one of Diamond Bar’s biggest victories of the morning. His exceptional round provided valuable momentum and played a significant role in Diamond Bar’s strong start.
The Half Point That Won the Match
As the afternoon drew to a close, the outcome of the inaugural Team Play rested on one Singles match.
Stephen Collins arrived at the 18th hole 1 Down, knowing Diamond Bar needed just one-half point to secure the overall team victory.
With the pressure squarely on his shoulders, Stephen delivered.
By winning the 18th hole, he squared the match and earned the crucial half point that officially clinched the first Team Play of 2026 for Diamond Bar Men’s Club, sealing a thrilling 7.5–6.5 victory over The Yips Golf Club. It was a fitting conclusion to a day that perfectly embodied everything that makes team match play so exciting.
More Than Just a Score
What began as a 4–2 Diamond Bar lead after the Best Ball matches evolved into a dramatic finish, with The Yips battling back to win the Singles session 4.5–3.5 and forcing the overall outcome to be decided on the final hole of the final match. It was a testament to the competitiveness of both clubs and a reminder that in match play, no lead is ever truly safe.
More importantly, the day showcased everything that makes club golf special. Players from both clubs competed with passion, represented their clubs with class, and displayed outstanding sportsmanship from the opening tee shot to the final putt. The competitive spirit on the course was matched only by the camaraderie shared between both clubs, making the inaugural Team Play a memorable experience for everyone involved.
